Bed Bugs or Dust Mites? How to Tell the Difference

Bed bugs or dust mites can both be blamed when people wake up itchy, but they are very different problems. Bed bugs bite and leave visible signs, while dust mites are microscopic and usually cause allergy symptoms rather than bite marks.

The Main Difference

Bed bugs are insects that feed on blood. They can leave bites, blood spots, dark droppings and shed skins around beds and furniture.

Dust mites are microscopic and feed on shed skin cells. You cannot see them with the naked eye, and they do not bite. They are more commonly linked to sneezing, itchy eyes, asthma symptoms and general irritation.

Do Dust Mites Bite?

No. Dust mites do not bite people. If you have clear bite marks in lines or clusters, bed bugs, fleas or another biting insect may be more likely than dust mites.

Dust mite irritation can still be unpleasant, but the solution is different. Washing bedding hot, reducing dust and using allergy covers can help dust mite problems, but these steps will not remove a bed bug infestation.

What Bed Bug Evidence Looks Like

Bed bug evidence is usually found close to the bed. Check mattress seams, bed frame joints, headboards and nearby furniture for dark spotting, tiny pale shed skins, live insects and blood marks.

If you find several of these signs, do not keep moving bedding and furniture around the home. That can spread bed bugs into other rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see dust mites?

No. Dust mites are microscopic. If you can see insects on the mattress or bed frame, they are not dust mites.

Do bed bug bites appear in a line?

They can. Bed bug bites often appear in lines or clusters, although reactions vary from person to person.

Will washing bedding remove bed bugs?

Hot washing and tumble drying can kill bed bugs on bedding, but it will not treat insects hiding in the bed frame, furniture or room.
